Your Back Is a Map

End-of-term slowdown, back/neck pain patterns, and a few gentle ways to soften (today)

Hi lovely,

How has your week been?

This week feels like the end-of-term energy — I can sense things around me slowing down. My son hasn’t been 100% (headache and coughing), but he’s been managing well… and it honestly felt like a sign from life:

“Give me a break. Return to your body (home). Connect with your loved ones.”

My week has been pretty balanced, and half-term will be a more chilling week. o;)

In my practice last week, I noticed something very clear: I had more massage sessions than energy healing sessions, and the theme was consistent — back pain and neck pain.

So I wanted to share a simple lens I use with clients:

The back often tells two stories: external + internal

Back pain isn’t always “one thing.” It’s often a mix of:

External load (outside → body)

  • posture, screens, driving

  • lifting/carrying, repetitive movement

  • sleep position, old injuries

  • lack of movement or too much movement

Internal load (inside → body)

  • stress and nervous system tension

  • boundaries and responsibility

  • relationships and emotional “holding”

  • pressure to perform, fear of judgement

  • the feeling of “carrying too much”

Sometimes pain is mostly mechanical. Sometimes it’s mostly emotional/nervous system. Often… it’s both.

A simple back map (yin/yang lens)

In a Chinese medicine / yin–yang style reflection:

  • right side = yang (doing / outward / future)

  • left side = yin (being / inward / past)

Not as diagnosis — just as a gentle way to listen.

Big picture meanings (reflective prompts)

Here’s the “big picture” map I often start with:

  • lower right back: “i want to help.” (doing more, pushing through)

  • lower left back: “i need help.” (receiving support, asking)

  • middle back: relationship themes (connection, emotional load, boundaries)

  • upper right back: fear of authority (pressure, performance, judgement)

  • upper left back: responsibility (duty, “it’s on me”, carrying others)

Even noticing where and which side can create a small “aha.”

Quick 90-second check-in (try now)

Place a hand on the area that’s uncomfortable and ask gently:

  1. Is this more external, internal, or both?

  2. What am I carrying right now? (physically/emotionally/mentally)

  3. Do I need to soften, strengthen, or ask for support?

  4. If my back could speak, what would it request today?

No forcing. Just listening.

What you can do at home (gentle + effective)

If you’re feeling pain, please come and see me — and here are a few things you can do today to help your system soften.

1) Widen awareness (60 seconds)

Pain pulls your attention into one spot. To calm the nervous system, widen your awareness:

  • notice your toesfeetlegs

  • feel the floor holding you

  • whisper: “i am here.”

This often reduces the threat signal and helps the body unclench.

2) Tennis ball release (1–2 minutes)

  • place a tennis ball between your back and the wall

  • explore a tender spot beside the spine (avoid pressing directly on the spine)

  • breathe slowly and let the tissue soften

  • keep it gentle — never sharp pain

3) Heat (10–20 minutes)

Heat tells the body: safe + soften

  • heat pack/hot water bottle on your back

  • longer exhales

  • if you can, lie down with knees supported

4) Talk to your back (visualisation)

Your body responds to imagery more than we think.

  • close your eyes and “meet” the painful area

  • notice the colour, texture, temperature

  • gently imagine it shifting toward green (or any colour that feels healing)

  • let the texture change: tight → warm → spacious

It’s not magic — it’s nervous system language.

When it’s time to get support

Self-care is beautiful — it’s often maintenance.
But if your back/neck pain is recurring, your body is bracing, or you feel “tight again” quickly, it can be a sign your system needs a deeper reset.

How I work (back/neck focused)

I tailor sessions depending on what your body needs:

  • Somatic massage (release held tension, circulation, “put the weight down”)

  • Craniosacral (nervous system regulation — especially if bracing/stress is involved)

  • Reiki (space, softness, inner calm)

  • Facial/Foot reflexology (grounding + whole-system regulation)

  • EFT (when the load is emotional — responsibility, pressure, difficulty receiving)

Many clients notice: once the nervous system feels safer, the body can finally let go.
