Soothe first, train calmness, and let it move through
How has your week been?
My son and I are back into the school routine now. And this week I noticed something unexpected: a little “unreasonable” anxiety rising — more restlessness than usual. It made me pause and wonder… why now?
I gave myself just 5–10 minutes to look into it (instead of judging it). Funny enough, I’ve been joining the Tapping World Summit as part of my study, and it’s helped me a lot — so anxiety feels like the perfect theme to share.
Anxiety is a body message, not a personality flaw
For me, anxiety is often the body’s communication system. It’s what happens when the nervous system forecasts:
“the future might be negative — prepare!”
It doesn’t mean the future is negative.
It means a protective part of you is trying to keep you safe.
Why it’s hard not to “do something”
Of course it’s not easy not to take action and solve the problem. We’re wired for survival. The body hears “danger!” and immediately wants to:
solve, fix, plan, control.
But here’s the gentle question:
“Is there danger right now… really?”
Most of the time, anxiety is a future story happening in the body — not an immediate threat. So the practice is:
don’t solve first — soothe first.
Calmness isn’t a personality trait — it’s a skill
Calm can feel unfamiliar if you’ve lived with responsibility, fast pace, or emotional pressure.
The good news is: calm is trainable, like exercise.
You don’t do one workout and become strong — you do small reps.
The nervous system learns the same way: tiny reps of safety.
A 2–3 minute “Soothe First” reset
Use this when anxiety rises.
1) Name it (10 seconds)
“Right now, anxiety is here.”
(No analysis.)
2) Ground (30 seconds)
Feel toes → feet → heels.
Let the floor hold you.
3) Tap to teach safety (60–90 seconds)
Tap side of hand or collarbone and say slowly:
- “even though my system thinks it needs to act, i choose to soothe first.”
- “right now, i am safe enough.”
- “i can let this move through.”
- “i don’t have to solve anything in this moment.”
4) Do-nothing time (30–60 seconds)
Soft eyes. One long exhale.
Let your shoulders drop one millimetre.
That’s it. You’re not ignoring life — you’re training regulation.
A simple reps plan (so calm becomes familiar)
Try 3 tiny reps a day (no big routine):
- morning: one long exhale + “safe enough”
- midday: 30 seconds feet on floor
- evening: 60 seconds tapping or humming
Small repetitions create big change.
