Preparing for the Next Season

You Don’t Need a New You for a New Season

The school summer holidays are coming to an end, and there is something about September that always feels like a beginning to me.

The light begins to change.

Our routines start again.

Summer slowly moves towards autumn.

And perhaps we begin thinking about what we would like for the rest of the year.

I had actually booked a few days off in advance and originally hoped we might go somewhere in France.

But life has been a little uncertain at home recently, and when the time came, I didn’t really feel like going away.

At first I thought:

So… what shall I do with these days off?

Then I realised:

I already have something quite precious — a few days of space.

Maybe I didn’t need to go anywhere dramatic.

Maybe I could use that space differently.

Making space for what comes next

So I started at home.

I decluttered.

I organised some things that had been waiting for my attention for far too long. 😊

I looked at some of my everyday habits and changed a few things around my eating and exercise routine.

I finally went for an orthodontic consultation that I had wanted to do for a long time.

I also had a sound healing session — some time simply to receive and nurture my own body and energy.

None of these things was particularly big.

But each one felt like taking care of something.

Clearing something.
Beginning something.
Nurturing something.

And slowly I realised that perhaps I wasn’t simply filling my days off.

I was preparing myself for the next season.

Sometimes inspiration is closer than we think

I also decided to do something very simple:

Explore somewhere locally that I haven’t been before.

Living in East Sussex, there is so much beautiful countryside around me, yet there are still many places I have never properly explored.

So I started discovering more of the South Downs Way, the Long Man of Wilmington and some beautiful circular walks.

I visited Berwick Church and enjoyed seeing the artwork there by Vanessa Bell and other artists connected with the Bloomsbury group.

I walked.

I looked.

I became curious.

And I came home feeling inspired.

No France.

No airport.

No glamorous holiday photos! 😊

But something had shifted.

It reminded me how often we look somewhere else for inspiration.

Another country.

Another retreat.

Another course.

Another experience.

And of course, all of those things can be wonderful.

But sometimes we don’t need to go very far.

Sometimes we simply need to become more curious about the life that is already around us.

We don’t always need a big change

We can easily associate a new season with a new start.

And then comes the pressure:

I’m going to exercise every day.

I’m going to completely change my diet.

I’m finally going to organise my whole house.

I’m going to start that project.

This time I’m really going to change!

I know this feeling. 😊

But these few days reminded me that change doesn’t always need to begin dramatically.

One drawer cleared.

One different meal.

One walk somewhere new.

One appointment finally made.

One small change to a routine.

One hour given back to yourself.

One idea written down.

They may seem insignificant on their own.

But our lives are made up of these ordinary moments.

Small daily things matter.

Planting seeds for autumn 🌱

I like thinking of this time of year as planting seeds.

Not necessarily seeds that need to grow immediately.

Some things need time.

We prepare the ground.

We clear some space.

We plant something.

We nurture it.

And then we allow it to develop.

Perhaps our intentions can be the same.

Instead of asking:

“What do I need to achieve this autumn?”

I’m more interested in asking:

“What would I like to nurture?”

Maybe I want to nurture my body.

My creativity.

My relationships.

My energy.

My curiosity.

My health.

My work.

More time outside.

More rest.

Or perhaps something that I can’t quite name yet.

An intention doesn’t always need an immediate result.

Sometimes it is simply a direction.

You don’t need a new you for a new season

I think this is what I want to remember as we move towards autumn.

I don’t need to become a new person.

I don’t need to completely reinvent my life.

And neither do you.

Perhaps preparing for a new season is less about adding more and more things to our lives.

Sometimes it is about looking at what is already there.

What do I want to keep?

What has become clutter — physically, mentally or emotionally?

What have I been putting off?

What gives me energy?

What would I like to experience more of?

What would I like to nurture?

And then perhaps we choose just one small thing.

One seed.

Preparing our body and mind for the season ahead

Our bodies experience seasonal changes too.

As routines change and we move towards shorter days, it can be a useful time to check in with ourselves.

Not because something has to be wrong.

And not because we need to “fix” ourselves before autumn.

Simply because our wellbeing also deserves a little space and attention.

Maybe your body wants more movement.

Maybe it wants more rest.

Maybe you have been meaning to return to a self-care practice.

Maybe you want more time outdoors.

Maybe you have been giving a lot to other people and would like to make a little more space for yourself.

Sometimes receiving support can also be one of those small seeds.

You don’t have to wait until you are exhausted, overwhelmed or in pain before caring for yourself.

Care can be part of preparation, not only recovery.

In my own work, I support people through bodywork, Reiki, reflexology, facial therapy and integrated mind-body approaches.

You don’t always need to know exactly what you need before you come.

Sometimes we begin simply by listening to where you are now.

What would you like to nurture?

As you move into September and towards autumn, perhaps give yourself a few quiet minutes.

You might ask:

What would I like to carry into the next season?

What am I ready to clear or leave behind?

What would I like to nurture?

And then:

What is one small thing I can do today?

It doesn’t have to be impressive.

It doesn’t have to transform your life.

Plant one small seed.

Give it a little attention.

And see what grows. 🌱

You don’t need a new you for a new season.

Perhaps you simply need a little space for the next part of you to grow.

With love,

Naomi Sato
