Exploring the Deeper Connections in Holistic Health
As we transition back into our routines after the long summer break, it’s the perfect time to check in on our well-being. Recently, one of my clients asked about headaches and what could be causing them. This question inspired me to explore how headaches often stem from deeper, interconnected imbalances in the body—not just physical tension.
In holistic therapy, we recognize that our mental, physical, energetic, and chemical (environmental) systems are all deeply connected. When one area becomes imbalanced, it can create discomfort, such as headaches, in another.
How the Body Communicates Imbalance
From a Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) perspective, headaches are often linked to the Liver and Stomach. While these organs may seem to function well physically, they can also store emotional and energetic stress, which can lead to headaches.
The Liver: Emotional Stress and Headaches
The liver is known to store anger and frustration. Emotional tension in the liver can manifest as headaches around the temples or the top of the head. This tension is often reflected in:
- Sternocleidomastoid (SCM): Tightness in the SCM, which is connected to the Liver meridian, can cause headaches on the sides or top of the head.
- Upper trapezius: Tension in this shoulder muscle, also influenced by the liver, often triggers headaches starting at the base of the skull and moving upwards.
The Stomach: Worry, Overthinking, and Headaches
The stomach is linked to worry and overthinking, which can cause headaches in the forehead or behind the eyes. Emotional tension here often affects:
- Masseter (Jaw muscle): This muscle, connected to the Stomach meridian, tends to tighten when you’re stressed, leading to headaches in the forehead or eye area.
- Pectoralis major (Chest muscle): Worry or digestive issues can create tension in this chest muscle, contributing to headaches.
What If It’s Not Just Physical?
Even if your liver and stomach seem to be functioning well, they store emotional energy and respond to environmental stressors. These underlying imbalances often result in headaches, even when nothing appears wrong physically.
