How to Be Present for Family — Without Losing Yourself
Finding your resistance and attachment, making peace with both, and listening from a place of true calm
Have you ever sat with a family member who was really struggling — and afterwards felt exhausted, heavy, or tangled in their pain as if it had become your own?
Family energy is the most intimate energy we carry. These bonds are formed earliest and held deepest. When someone in your family is suffering, your nervous system responds before your mind has even caught up.
The pull to fix, absorb, make it better — that comes from love. But it can also leave you depleted, or so full of their energy that there is no room left for your own.
Compassion does not ask you to disappear into another person’s pain. It asks you to be present — from a place of calm, not chaos.
So how do we hold both? How do we stay open-hearted with the people we love most, and still protect the energy that belongs to us?
Here are three steps I come back to — in my work with clients, and in my own life.
Step 1 — Find your resistance and your attachment
Before you can offer anything to someone else, pause and look honestly at what is alive in you first.
There is likely resistance — a part of you that does not want to face this situation, that finds it painful, frustrating, or unfair. And there is likely attachment — a part of you holding on to how you wish things were, to who you want this person to be, or to the outcome you are hoping for.
Both are completely natural. They are not flaws. They are simply energies that are present. And when we do not see them, they run us quietly from underneath.
✦ Naomi’s tip: Place your hand on your heart. Take one slow breath. Ask yourself: “What am I resisting right now — and what am I holding on to?” You do not need to change anything yet. Just see it. That moment of honest seeing is already the beginning of change.
Reflection: What am I resisting right now? And what am I holding on to?
Step 2 — Be at peace with both — sometimes, that is enough
Once you have found your resistance and your attachment, the invitation is not to get rid of them — it is to make peace with them.
This does not mean agreeing with the situation. It does not mean pretending everything is fine. It means allowing yourself to hold both truths at the same time — the resistance and the love, the attachment and the exhaustion — without needing to resolve the tension before you can show up.
Often, being at peace with both is not a final answer. It is simply enough for now. Enough to breathe. Enough to be present without being consumed.
✦ Naomi’s tip: Try saying quietly to yourself: “I notice my resistance. I notice my attachment. I allow both to be here.” You are not welcoming them in forever — you are simply stopping the fight. That softening, even for a moment, creates a little space inside you. And space is where calm lives.
Reflection: Can you hold your resistance and your attachment gently — without needing to fix either one first?
Step 3 — From peace — what do you know?
Here is where something quietly opens.
When you are no longer fighting your resistance and your attachment — when you have made even a small peace with both — a little space opens inside you. And in that space, something clearer can emerge.
Not a solution. Not an answer to their pain. But something you know. Perhaps you know what you can genuinely offer and what you cannot. Perhaps you know that your presence, without words, is enough. Perhaps you know that your calm — the simple fact of you remaining steady — is what they need most from you right now.
From this place, you can listen compassionately and still protect your energy — because you are no longer in the struggle with yourself. You are rooted. And from that rootedness, love can flow without draining you.
✦ Naomi’s tip: Ask yourself from this quieter place: “What do I know right now?” Let the answer come gently — not from your worry, not from your guilt — but from somewhere deeper. That is your truth. That is where your real support for this person begins.
Reflection: When you are at peace with what is — what do you know? What becomes possible that was not possible before?
Take action from love — not from fear or worry
Whatever step you feel called to take — reaching out, setting a limit, offering support, or simply pausing — let it come from love. Not from guilt. Not from fear of what might happen if you don’t. Not from worry about what others will think.
When your action is rooted in love, it carries a different energy. It is sustainable. It is honest. And it is something the people around you can actually feel.
This is not a one-time practice. With family especially, these patterns run deep and we will meet them again and again. But each time we do, we have the chance to arrive a little more consciously — rooted in ourselves, even while remaining open to the people we love.
That, I believe, is where true compassion lives. Not in losing yourself — but in coming home to yourself, and from there, offering what is genuinely yours to give.
