Back in Chilly England: A Simple Immune Reset (with Sa-yu)
After a beautiful trip to Istanbul, I landed back in England to cold, wet weather—and two family bugs at home. With the Libra new moon (balance) and only two months left in the year, my body asked to adjust. This post is a gentle, practical guide to steady your autumn/winter immunity with warmth, calm, and tiny habits you can actually keep.
Why Immunity Dips Now
-
Cold + damp + wind: lungs/sinuses work harder
-
Stress + less sleep: resilience drops
-
Dry indoor heating: airways dry out
-
Travel/commute: more exposure, rhythm disrupted
Calm thought: I am safe to slow down and warm up.
The Balance Trio: Calm • Warm • Nourish
1) Calm (downshift the stress alarm)
-
Hand on chest → breathe in 4 / out 6 × 10
-
Let jaw/shoulders drop
-
Say “not now” to one non-essential task
Why it helps: longer exhales tell your nervous system “safe now.”
2) Warm (lungs love cosiness)
-
Layers + scarf (cover chest/throat)
-
Warm hydration throughout the day; dim lights 30 mins before bed
Why it helps: warmth relaxes throat/chest and supports digestion—your repair team.
3) Nourish (raw materials)
-
Protein each meal (palm-size)
-
Vitamin C little & often (kiwi, peppers, berries)
-
Zinc/Selenium (pumpkin seeds/seafood; 1–2 Brazil nuts/day)
-
Omega-3s (oily fish or algae)
-
Vitamin D (as appropriate)
-
Warm, easy-to-digest meals
Sa-yu (白湯): The Simplest Warm-Water Ritual
What it is: plain water that’s boiled and sipped warm—nothing added.
Why: gently warms digestion, hydrates kindly, and turns sipping into a mini calm ritual.
Myth-buster: Sa-yu is not lemon water. Add lemon/ginger and it becomes a (helpful) tea—just not true Sa-yu.
How to Make Sa-yu (60 seconds)
-
Boil fresh water (kettle or pan).
-
Cool to comfortably warm (~50–60 °C—not hot).
-
Pour 150–250 ml and sip slowly.
Best time: on an empty stomach in the morning; wait 10–15 minutes before coffee or breakfast.
Sensitive tummy? Start with 100 ml. Reflux? Keep it warm, not hot. Fluid restrictions? Follow clinician advice.
Try now (1 minute): small cup of Sa-yu → breathe in 4 / out 6 × 10 → notice shoulders drop.
Teas & Essential Oils for Cough / Runny Nose (Adult Use)
Teas
-
Ginger–lemon–honey (add honey when warm)
-
Thyme tea (5–7 mins; lovely for a tickly cough)
-
Peppermint or chamomile (if sinuses feel full)
Essential Oils
-
Diffuser: 2 drops eucalyptus + 1 lemon + 1 rosemary (3–5 drops total/room)
-
Steam bowl: 1–2 drops eucalyptus or rosemary in hot water; inhale 3–5 mins, eyes closed
Safety: avoid eyes; do not ingest; eucalyptus/rosemary not for young children; avoid if scents trigger asthma. Lemon on skin can be phototoxic—keep covered from sun.
Two Quick Acupressure Points (90 Seconds Total)
-
LU7 (thumb-side wrist) → press 30–60s/side to ease breath/front-neck line
-
ST36 (below knee, outer shin) → rub/press 30–60s/leg to support overall energy
(Optional) LI4 (thumb–index web) for head/sinus tension—avoid in pregnancy.
“I Feel a Bug Coming…” Start Here
-
Sick-day bowl: miso or chicken broth + garlic, ginger, spring onion, mushrooms, greens
-
Steam & rest: warm shower or steam bowl; early night
-
Neck hold (2 mins): one hand cups back of neck/base of skull, two fingers on forehead (above brows); breathe in 4 / out 6 × 10 (stop if dizzy)
Reflection: Where can you swap one cold thing for one warm thing today?
