I Hope Your Week Has Been Well
This past week felt refreshing. I took a 3-day trip to Budapest to visit a friend in her 20s and wander through the city.
I was amazed by how beautifully organized Budapest is—almost like Japan. We felt safe exploring, and on the first day, despite the drizzle, we found a cozy café with a breathtaking view.
Then, something magical happened…
🌈 A spectacular rainbow stretched across the river—a sight unlike anything I had ever seen before.
It was a moment of stillness, awe, and quiet joy. And it reminded me of something important—Yohaku.
(I’m sharing a photo of this beautiful rainbow—scroll down to see it!)
What is Yohaku?
In Japanese aesthetics, Yohaku (余白) refers to the intentional use of empty space. It’s the idea that what is left unfilled is just as important as what is present.
You see Yohaku in:
✔️ Japanese calligraphy – The white space around the ink enhances its beauty.
✔️ Zen gardens – Open spaces create a sense of peace and contemplation.
✔️ Traditional tea ceremonies – Silence and pauses between movements hold meaning.
But Yohaku isn’t just an artistic principle—it’s a way of living.
Two years ago, I decided to take small solo getaways to create my own Yohaku—a pause from everyday life.
The Importance of Creating Space in a Busy Life
Life moves fast. Work, responsibilities, and stress can easily fill every moment. But when we don’t create space to pause, we lose clarity, creativity, and balance.
💡 Yohaku teaches us that empty spaces aren’t wasted—they’re necessary.
📌 Ways to Create Yohaku in Your Life:
✔️ Schedule time for stillness – Even 5 minutes of quiet can reset your energy.
✔️ Embrace silence in conversations – Not every moment needs to be filled with words.
✔️ Declutter your environment – A clear space helps create a clear mind.
✔️ Take a break—without guilt – Rest is productive.
Whether it’s a trip, a moment of mindfulness, or simply breathing deeply before your next task, Yohaku helps us feel more present and aligned.
Yohaku in Holistic Healing
In holistic therapy, I often remind my clients that:
✨ Healing happens in the spaces between treatments.
✨ Silence in a session is just as important as hands-on work.
✨ Resting after a massage or energy work allows your body to integrate the benefits.
When we allow gaps between the noise, the movement, and the stress, we create room for deep healing.
Have You Been Giving Yourself Enough Space?
❓ Do you feel like your days are always full, with no time to pause?
❓ Are you holding tension in your body without realizing it?
❓ When was the last time you allowed yourself a true moment of rest?
If you’re feeling overwhelmed, tense, or in need of balance, consider this your sign to create Yohaku in your life.
💆♀️ A massage, reflexology, or energy healing session is a perfect way to pause, reset, and realign.
